Green Friendly Painting - Protecting your family

When painting your house it is important to consider an often forgotten aspect, safety. What is safety when painting? Many people consider using latex gloves, or opening the window to circulate the air but are not reviewing the products they use. Companies often claim green friendly products but a recent consumer survey discovered most of these products are anything but green. To truly get the benefits of a healthy home during painting, choose a paint that offers low or no volatile organic compounds (VOC). The compounds found in paint are not only harmful in the air, but can be left behind on the painted surfaces, therefore putting your family at harm. Is your family not worth the extra few dollars for a good quality paint - shortcuts can be fatal. A quality no VOC latex paint also paints better, making your painted surfaces look better, last longer and often coating more surface area, thus saving you in the long run. The best quality no VOC paint we have discovered to date can be found through General Paints. Why not ask your local paint dealer or contractor to carry it?

There are other ways to keep painting environmentally conscious. Buying better quality products that are reusable help reduce waste and again increase the quality of painting. A hard form tray can be used over and over, instead of the plastic liners - stay away from the metal ones, they tend to rust immediately affecting any paint you put in them. A good quality brush or roller can last for months if cleaned properly. When cleaning, try to use a bucket system that eliminates large water use. Latex based paints are biodegradeable and can be safely treated in your cities water treatment plant. Your excess paint can be saved (label it for future use) and any old cans can usually be disposed of by municipal toxic waste centers.

Your family is indeed protected if you think about protecting the environment they live in, both immediate and the greater global environment. Don't you deserve the best! These are just a few ways your actions can help your family and neighbours.
